The Craneway Pavilion in Richmond, CA played host to this year’s High Times Medical Cannabis Cup in the San Francisco area. High Times was awesome enough to hook up the HMJ crew with passes to the event to share the wonders of bay area medical cannabis with the world! The event consisted of two main areas. The first was the Pavilion Hall which housed the seminar stage and many booths including Bhang showcasing unmedicated samples of their newest chocolate, Highly Educated toting their latest & greatest in Ti nails and many more. There were examples of art on display as well as an artist painting a piece right before your eyes. Many of the booths represented high class glass companies like Pulse glass, and others were representing groups pushing for legalization and safe access efforts like Americans for Safe Access and NORML.
Just outside of the main hall was a line of four food trucks filled with a wide variety of munchies to fulfill any stoner’s appetite, but it was behind the main hall where all the magic was really happening. Once verified as a prop. 215 patient Cannabis Cup goers were allowed access to the 215 area which housed an outdoor area of lined up booths showcasing the best medical marijuana in the greater bay area. Similar to the Cup in Los Angeles this year it was clear the medicine of choice was concentrates, mostly every patient in the tented area were simply standing & dab’n, some booths were selling or simply giving away free dabs.
My personal favorite booth was Harborside Health Center‘s which included a full hash bar with a large number of concentrates from their hash menu. While most booths with dabs were using the popular Ti nail & dome set up Harborside’s was slightly different. They used an old school method of dab’n the hash and waxes on Japanese Hookah coals which gives off no smoke or flavor, but simply heats up. The result was a slower burning, but smooth and hard hitting hash rip that had me bringing friends back for their own Harborside hash bar experience, (and for more dabs for myself of course)! Executive Director of Harborside Health Center and medical cannabis movement leader Steve DeAngelo and brother Andrew DeAngelo of “Weed Wars” were in attendance to give interviews and greet fellow members of the medical marijuana community.
Collectives and groups in attendance in the 215 area included: Elemental Wellness Center, Crown Extracts, HumidiPaks, Canna Culture Collective, The Bud Barber, HitMan Glass, The Cali Connection Seed Co., Grand Daddy Purp Collective and many more. Most booths had at least one product entered into the various sections of the competition and were highlighting their entered item(s). HitMan Glass showed off the latest in their line of tubes designed specifically for concentrates. The “Borch” tubes include a built in butane torch for hands free nail heating, as well as wild glass work like a Boba Fett or Predator helmet built inside of the oil rig. Elemental Wellness Center’s booth included an ice sculpture that doubled as a drink cooler for their Irish Moss drink. The Medicinal Alchemy booth displayed their impressive looking concentrates, which were not for sale, but what was for sale was a how-to DVD with a whopping $250 price tag instructing patients on how to make their own concentrates using Medicinal Alchemy’s secret techniques.
The folks over at the HumidiPak booth were nice enough to let the HMJ crew and friends escape from the heat and take some dabs behind the booth during the long day of events and meds. It was a real treat getting to meet up with fellow patients and sharing our latest finds, like HitMan Glass Side Car oil rig complete with their latest “Outtie” Belly Button domeless nail set-up. Even Senior Cultivation Editor of High Times Magazine Danny Danko himself stopped by the booth to share with us some of the Sativa Entries he was judging for this year’s competition! It was truly a dream come true.
The end of the first day of festivities came complete with a performance from a few cannabis friendly MC’s including bay area rap legend Del the Funky Homosapien. A perfect way to end a long day: live beats and bong rips.
Of course as with any cannabis cup the event is not complete without awarding those entrees for the finest cannabis and cannabis products in the area. The different areas of competition included: Best Sativa, Best Indica, Best Hybrid, Best CBD Strain, Best Concentrate, Best Non-Solvent Hash, Best Edibles, Best Booth, Best Product and Best Glass. The awards were given out on the main stage by Miss High Times herself while the crowd proceeded to toke along to the naming of the winners. The full list of award winners can be found here on High Times’s website. All in all it was a cannabis stuffed weekend where hundreds if not thousands of stoners from all over California gather to compare, discuss, and celebrate medical cannabis and all it has done for the world.
