Afghanistan, the #1 producer of Opium has now become the #1 producer of Hashish. It is estimated that Afghanistan produces between 1,500 and 3,500 tons of hash a year. Afghanistan has roughly 10,000 – 24,000 hectares (1 hectare = 10,000 square meters) of land where cannabis is cultivated. Though this is a large amount of space it isn’t the largest compared to other countries, how is Afghanistan the #1 producer with less fields? Their yield is much more then other countries, Afghanistan produces about 319 pounds per hectare while Morocco only produces about 88 pounds per hectare. So they are able to get more cannabis in smaller sized fields than other countries. It is a lot cheaper for Afghani farmers to produce marijuana than it is to produce opium, and farmers make a bigger profit off of marijuana than they would growing “legal” crops.
