News there is an all white basketball league in the works doesn’t mean the strokey white guys that tear it up on the courts of the JCC and YMCA are going to be playing professional basketball.  No, it merely signifies that racism still lurks beneath the surface of American society.  Check out the story and our reaction after the jump.

The All American Basketball Alliance announced they are starting an all-white league in June of 2010.  They attempted to attract Augusta, Georgia as one of the 12 inaugural cities according to the Augusta Chronicle.  It makes sense that the All-American Basketball Alliance (which sounds like a Nazi AAU tournament) would try and get Augusta, Georgia on board.  Augusta is home to the Augusta Country Club which hosts the Masters every year.  It’s also had some controversial history as the site of Martha Burk’s crusade against the all-boys club mentality of Augusta National.  Fortunately, the mayor of Augusta, Deke Copenhaver, had this to say:

“As a sports enthusiast, I have always supported bringing more sporting activities to Augusta, however, in this instance I could not support in good conscience bringing in a team that did not fit with the spirit of inclusiveness that I, along with many others, have worked so hard to foster in our city.”

The AABA President Don “Moose” Lewis doesn’t want you to think it’s just some racist attempt to cleanse the league.  No, he’s just trying to return the game to it’s roots:

“There’s nothing hatred [sic] about what we’re doing.  I don’t hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now. Here’s a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like.  Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?  That’s the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction.”

We can’t help but think the bigoted idiot “Moose”, is just a latter day Bull Connor.  Hopefully, any other city contacted will respond like Augusta’s mayor.  The worst part about the whole incident is it was announced on the eve of the national MLK day.  It’s incredible to think that our country can elect our first African-American President, but still produce atavistic dinkbags like the AABA President.
