This November mid-term election had 4 different states trying to decriminalize marijuana in one way or another. Unfortunately for California, South Dakota and Oregon things didn’t turn out in favor of ending prohibition, but Arizona stuck in there and is now the 15th state to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes! It was a close tally the whole way with the vote count being split right down the middle (50.13% Yes – 49.87% No).
“Voters in Arizona have sided with science and compassion while dealing yet another blow to our nation’s cruel and irrational prohibition on marijuana,” said Rob Kampia, executive director of the Marijuana Policy Project. MPP provided funding and support to the Arizona Medical Marijuana Project, a local group that ran the Prop 203 campaign.
Prop 203 seems like a very strict take on medical marijuana to me. There will be 120 dispensaries allowed to operated in Arizona and any patients living within a 25 mile radius of any of the facilities won’t be allowed to grow personally, they have to go to the dispensary were they are limited to no more than 2.5 ounces every two weeks. I think if California’s Prop 215 was more like this, then Prop 19 probably would have passed with flying colors (yes I’m still dwelling on the loss). Good for Arizona on at least breaking new ground with the passing of Proposition 203.
