The polls are encouraging, but only if everyone in California who wants cannabis re-legalized shows up and votes. Let’s take a look at the range of support lining up to back Proposition 64 and bring cannabis back to the mainstream.
“You don’t have to be pro-marijuana to be pro-Proposition 64. The status quo has wasted billions of taxpayer dollars, woefully failed to protect our children, and created new generations of career criminals. The only ones who benefit under prohibition are illegal operators, black-market dealers and drug cartels. It’s time for a smarter, safer approach.”
California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom
“As a military veteran and prosecutor, I know what it takes to protect the public safety. Proposition 64 creates a legal, responsible and regulated framework for marijuana that is fiscally responsible, smartly builds on what California has already done with medical marijuana and provides necessary protections for local governments and law enforcement agencies.”
U.S. Representative Ted W. Lieu (D-Los Angeles County)
“Proposition 64 will end the injustice of a war on marijuana that targets communities of color and focus our public resources on proven solutions – such as education, prevention, youth programs and job raining.”
Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens)
“As a co-author of the new Medical Marijuana laws signed by Governor Brown, I support Proposition 64 because it builds on that regulatory structure and strengthens it by adding a tax structure that will finally allow state and local government to offset the community impacts of the marijuana industry – as we do with every other legal industry.”
Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer (D-Los Angeles)
“California NAACP was an early supporter and helped with the drafting of Proposition 64 because we have long believed that our country’s misguided war on marijuana has been an abject and expensive failure – with billions of dollars wasted. Even worse, it has disproportionately targeted and harmed communities of color.
Ron Hasson, President, NAACP Hollywood/Beverly Hills
“Proposition 64 will strengthen public safety. It will allow law enforcement to focus its resources on serious crimes and will provide substantial funding for better standards, training and technology for officers in the field, especially those who keep our roads and freeways safe.”
Diane Goldstein, retired Lieutenant & 21-year veteran of the Redondo Beach Police Department
“Proposition 64 will create opportunities for good, safe and legal jobs and protect workers in a growing industry.”
Michelle Bugarin, Medical Marijuana Worker and Member, UFCW Local 770
“Marijuana criminalization is an inhumane policy which has destroyed too many families and futures – especially in communities of color. Its failure can be measured in the billions of dollars wasted in ineffective enforcement or the years stolen from Californians handed a criminal record for a drug no more harmful than alcohol. Proposition 64 is about social justice and starting to heal the damage done to our communities by the war on marijuana.”
Reverend Walter Contreras, National Latino Evangelical Coalition & Pasadena Presbyterian Church

You often hear me going on about how significant it will be when any state touching the Mississippi River re-legalizes. I don’t want to short-change the issue: California re-legalizing, and by citizens’ vote, not legislative action, is huge, and not in the Donald Trump way. Huge as in enormously significant. Let’s get this job done.
