But I Need That Weed For Church!

This story has really forced me to reconsider my boycott of organized religion. The Alaskan appeals court recently ruled against a couple accused of growing pot that they claim is needed as members of their religion, the United Global Mankind Divine Maintenance and Direction.
Rather than smoking it, members of this church douse their bodies with a mixture of marijuana juice and olive oil. Alaskan courts called bullshit. The Superior Court Judge presiding over this case ruled that although First Amendment rights protect religious freedom, the couple made up their beliefs. The judge went on to say that the defendant’s speech and manner under oath left the court with the undoubted feeling that he was making it up as he went along in his testimony. The couple pleaded no contest, he to fourth-degree misconduct with a controlled substance, she to fourth-degree attempted misconducts. She got a suspended sentence and he served seven days in jail. They have the option of taking the case to the Alaska Supreme Court.
