Cannabis Use Linked to Lower Rates of Obesity

In a new recent Canadian study, marijuana smoking has been linked to lower waistlines. Rather than forcing your metabolism to fail and succumb to the munchies, new research published in Obesity Magazine shows cannabis users actually have lower rates of overeating and rates of being overweight.

“The study is not the first to link cannabis use with lower incidences of obesity and diabetes… Investigators reported, “[S]ubjects who reported using marijuana in the past month had lower levels of fasting insulin and HOMA-IR [insulin resistance], as well as smaller waist circumference and higher levels of HDL-C [high-density lipoprotein or ‘good’ cholesterol]. These associations were not as strong among those who reported using marijuana at least once, but not in the past 30 days—suggesting that the impact of marijuana use on insulin and insulin resistance exists during periods of recent use.”

This research even shows that cannabis users show lower risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes than those who have never touched the drug.
