Downtown Vancouver, a block west of the city’s famed Granville Avenue, a most original get-together is underway. It’s the Yaletown Medical Society’s weekly "Green Room Comedy Night," three hours of stand-up comedy, free for Yaletown members and open to guests at five dollars per head. The weekly shows are also live-streamed and archived via youstream.tv.
Yaletown GM, and medicinal cannabis expert, Cindy Martin, believes that laughter, like cannabis, is a powerful medicine. She wanted Yaletown members to have a regular place to meet, socialize, toke, and snack, all while enjoying some of Vancouver’s brightest comedic talent.
The lineup usually consists of 4-6 opening acts followed by the night’s headliner. Though the Green Room is open to amateurs, Yaletown features at least one or two top local acts, and occasionally brings in special guests from outside Vancouver. “For five dollars you’re getting an herb-friendly environment, munchies, and lots of laughs. You can’t really beat that anywhere in the city,” says Julio Graham. Julio recently moved to Vancouver from Ottawa, Ontario, and though he’s not yet a member at Yaletown, he’s a regular guest at the comedy show. “There’s just not a lot of places like this, anywhere. I mean, where else can you go and smoke all the weed you want, get entertained, but have to sneak out into the alley for cigarettes and booze? This place is healthy on many, many levels.”
Yaletown's weekly Green Room Comedy Night commences every Wednesday evening at 7pm PST at 1281 Howe Street. You can join the live stream broadcast here.
