Wow. It seems that just as soon as middle America learned of the reality show Weed Wars, they fell in love, and things looked so promising only months ago. We wrote about the positive reception of the show as it brought a realistic view of the people involved in the medicinal cannabis community from the perception of the suppliers, customers and workers instead of the nightly news.
Weed Wars accomplished a lot by showing America who some ‘stoner’s’ actually are; sick people, injured people and people who are looking to cannabis to solve problems way bigger than simply an urge to ‘getting high’ as some conservative media would have the public believe.
Yeah, I think we all waited and watched to see if popular culture would find love for the medical marijuana industry as seen through the eyes the Harborside Health Center in lovely California, USA.
We all hoped that maybe, just maybe, ‘the man’ would give us a chance but alas, he shan’t.
We want to take this opportunity to inform everyone of the Discovery Channel decision regarding the future of our groundbreaking television program, “Weed Wars.” But first, we must take a moment to offer our personal thanks to everyone who played instrumental roles in this process and to honor the accomplishments of our efforts.
For the first time on a major television network, medical cannabis collectives were shown from the patient point-of-view rather than the law enforcement point-of-view. Never before had America been exposed to our side of the story or heard the sound of our voices.
This is a real bummer and a big loss to the industry. Although not every cannabis industry ‘guru’ agreed with Discovery Channel’s depiction of medical marijuana or the decision to exclusively highlight the Harborside Health Center, no one can argue that Weed Wars was an accomplishment for us all.
The simple fact the show even existed was a step in the direction of changing the conversation of what it means to have personal freedom in America. Weed Wars and the campaign to re-evaluate current marijuana legislation is forcing us all to challenge our perception of civil rights and privacy.
Bringing the topic of cannabis to the forefront of every day life causes us to criticize the state of our current social system which will allow sick people to remain sick with no medicine, no available health insurance and no right to alternatives to their suffering.
Weed Wars and those who support legalized/decriminalized cannabis laws want to change our culture from what we currently have which is one where revenue is all the morality that really mattered when you find out that the same government locking you up is also the biggest drug pusher of all.
Good luck, Kids. You’re gonna need it.
