I recently spoke with Eve before her performance at Rock the Bells festival in NJ. The HMJ team was backstage catching a glimpse of Common’s set when she arrived as if out of no where, a vibrant vixen in all black and platform pumps. She kindly asked us to join her in her dressing room where we shared a few words. The multi-platinum emcee spoke about being a role model stating “after a while you realize ‘Damn I have a responsibility’… I’ll try to do a record that’s positive and uplifted because I feel like that’s my duty.” She also touched on the current market of female emcees mentioning the lack of females gaining recognition and “even if they’re getting love it’s not spread out the right way”. But the Philly native still has faith in some new comers: “Kendrick Lamar, A$AP, French Montana. I like Azealia. I like some of the stuff she says and her style. I like how quirky she is.” When we asked how she felt about the ban on dispensaries in LA she agreed, “If you’re shutting places down where it’s actually legal to be able to sell it, that’s hypocritical.” Check out the rest:
On being a role model
I think after a while you realize “Damn I have a responsibility”. I don’t think as an artist you should ever sensor yourself. Be who you are! But at the same time you should let people know, especially younger fans, that you do stand for something. That more things are important than drinking and fucking and partying. So for me that’s what changed. Most times on my album, I’ll try to do a record that’s positive and uplifted because I feel like that’s my duty. I’m not saying everyone else has to do it. That’s just how I feel about it.
Her message to the youth
It’s cliche to say it but it’s not as hard as you think. And even when it is hard, always look up. Never look down, ever. Keep your head up. No matter how hard it is. No matter if it feels like you’re walking through mollasses, walking through mud; keep your head up because it definitely gets better.
On the current market of female emcees
Now some chicks are finally coming up but for a few years it was nobody. Then Nicki hit and she’s doing her thing but before it was more even with the females that were out. Right now it’s just not. There’s like 2 up here and the rest are struggling even if they’re getting love it’s not spread out the right way. At least with all of us. When I was out Trina was out, Missy was out, and Kim and Foxy; it was a nice cycle. I think hip hop needs that, it’s just too much testosterone. No offense men. It needs more of a balance.
On new artists she’d like to work with
I like Kendrick Lamar, A$AP, French Montana. I like Azealia. I like some of the stuff she says and her style. I like how quirky she is. It’s a lot of good music. I’m not mad at what’s happening. There’s still some whack shit out there but there’s some good shit too.
On her fondest memory of Chris Lighty
My most vivid memory was when I sat down with him right before I hired my manager, who had been my manager for 10 years at the time. I sat and talke to him for like 2 hours and just picked his brain because I was thinking about coming to Violator. Obviously I’ve seen him throughout the years but for me that was the most time spent with him.
On Medicinal Marijuana legislation
It’s hypocritical. On one hand the government wants to feel like they’re doing something but at the end of the day it’s bullshit. Obviously. If you’re shutting places down where it’s actually legal to be able to sell it, that’s hypocritical.
Eve has since announced that she has signed a new record deal and is ready to release her much anticipated new album “Lip Lock” with the first single hitting air waves by the end of the year. Eve has also been tweeting about her new track “She Bad Bad” which may be a taste of what listeners can look forward to.
Yeah, E-V-E, hungry like a lion #SheBadBad
