Giving Pot a Black Eye

I love when the media misses the point of a story.  In The Denver Post is an article about a previously convicted felon (murder, no less) whose new crime is firing a gun (a street sweeper, no less; ever seen one of those things?  scary cool, photo at left) firing indiscriminately through a neighborhood.  That’s the story.  Here’s the headline:  Longmont marijuana caregiver pleads guilty to randomly firing weapon.

So, enjoy: [Our friend] was convicted of first-degree murder in Harris County, Texas, in 1992 and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He also has convictions for possession of cocaine on his record. He got only ten years for a first! In Texas? Anyway . . . “A medical-marijuana caregiver faces more time in prison than he did for first-degree murder after he was caught shooting off a weapon known as a “street sweeper” through his Longmont neighborhood. A federal judge could sentence [him] to almost 15 years in prison June 8 — and possibly more.”

The weapon charge is the real story. But, wait for it . . . “Deputies from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office also found 50 to 100 marijuana plants in his home . . . [and] paperwork from the state of Colorado indicating he was a caregiver to at least nine patients.” He’s a state licensed caregiver.  So why, along with the weapon charge, did he plead guilty to a lawful activity? Federal law trumps state law when the feds say it does. Duh.

There’s more at The Denver Post.
