Growing weed may become a misdemeanor

Growing marijuana soon can become a misdemeanor for California residents. A bill supported by Tom Ammiano would switch around the mandatory felony to a lighter sentence. California residents who disagreed with the legalization of marijuana just a year ago are only punishable by a $100 infraction if caught with an ounce or less of marijuana . Gov. Arnold Schwarznegger signed the law making it an infraction. Patrick Goggin, a San Francisco lawyer who continues to support the hemp legislation in Sacramento, has hope the bill will past. He questions whether or not Gov. Jerry Brown will sign AB 1017. If the bill passes, growing an acre of marijuana could be treated as a misdemeanor. DA’s from Humboldt and Mendocino county support the law which is quite interesting as marijuana is still illegal under federal law.
