Impressions From My First SXSW Experience

South By Southwest is one of the largest music, film, and interactive festivals in the world.  The HMJ team had the amazing opportunity to attend the music portion in March, 2015!!! Our trip was sponsored by our friend Pete Morerro of PVM Entertainment in conjunction with Weed World Candies.

The music portion of SXSW is one of the largest music festival of its kind in the world.  There were over 2,000 official performers playing in more than 100 venues.  The whole city of Austin basically becomes a huge party.  Some local embrace it, while other are annoyed by it.  People traveled from around the world.  It was an amazing experience.

It is impossible to share a wrap up of all of SXSW unless you had a team of 100+ reporters, however this will tell it from our hazy perspective.  We had the chance to visit over a dozen shows over the course of the week and got about 15 hours of sleep for the whole week.  If we had gone to any of the shows individually, they would have been amazing.  If you combine them all, my mind was blown.  We felt like we were on tour.

I wrote a post highlighting how crazy our first few days at SXSW were.  One noteable experience from the entire trip was that we had the opportunity to ride in a van plastered with marijuana related prints owned by Weed World Candies.  We ended up hustling lots of their CBD candies.  Review for those is coming SOON!

Here are some of the highlights for me.

6th st

For those of you who don’t know, sixth Street is the primary location of downtown Austin. It is the place where most of the venues are and most of the biggest parties went down, including the Lose Control show that I told you guys about previously.  The first night at 6th st was fairly calm even know there were at least a few thousand people out there.  We took a selfie.

We were there for SXSW Music, but we managed to make our way to SXSW Film, which overlapped the music portion. We got to see a screening of a new film called ‘Rolling Papers’ which was an independent documentary that was released to simultaneously show the rise of the cannabis industry in Colorado and the downfall of newspapers. It follows Ricardo Baca of the Denver Post and the Cannabist as he explores marijuana legalization in Colorado.

Keep up with this film here. I highly recommend it.

Zoe Kravitz

Debatably my favorite show of the whole week. Completely unplanned and spontaneous. Small venue. Packed house. Unforgettable show.

We were literally just walking right by the venue and we heard some dope music coming from there. We decided to go in and check it out and it turned out to be Zoe Kravitz and her sick band Lolawolf. This was my first time seeing her live and I loved it.

Loud Pack show
The most anticipated show for me and almost all other stoners was the loud pack show put on by Atlantic records. This show featured amazing artists such as Fat Trel, Curren$y, Wiz Khalifa. As most smoking shows are, they claimed to be strict about weed but the key is to wait until the artist tells everyone to smoke. Once that happened the whole room lit up. I even got some footage of Wiz sharing some weed with a fan. Good times.

Gangsta Boo
We had the opportunity to work closely with Gangsta Boo of 3-6 Mafia and she showed us a lot about SXSW from the perspective of an artist performing. It was awesome to have this experience from both the view of an artist and the view of media as our first experience. Shouts to Gangsta Boo. She’s got a new EP dropping this year!

WSHH shows

We went to the WSHH showcase two nights in a row and it was definitely the most hood party we went to. That’s not a bad thing. Everyone was there to have a good time and no fights broke out I would end up on world star hip hop. We got backstage access and got the opportunity to meet with several incredible performers including Kirko Bangz and Dej Loaf.

The Fader Fort

Fader Magazine and Converse teamed up to create an indoor outdoor haven where they have several booths giving away sneakers, free beer, and some of the top artists out. The show we went to was headlined by Migos, Big Sean and T-Pain. They each individually killed it! The venue was sick. Another unforgettable show.

Snoop as the keynote speaker

Friday was highlighted by Snoop Dogg opening the day as the Keynote Speaker for SXSW. He was the first hip hop artist to act as the keynote speaker for SXSW.  He shared his life story, what he has learned, how much he has given back, how Snoop Lion came to exist, and an awesome story about Willie Nelson and him.

I could not have asked for a better first time SXSW experience.  Shouts to again to PVM Entertainment and Weed World Candies for helping to make it happen!
