Lance Berkman for MVP?

Astros First Basemen Lance Berkman has been on a serious tear lately. He’s been stealing bases, playing stellar defense and he’s been swinging the bat like a savage.

Most people probably don’t notice because he doesn’t play for the Yankees or Red Sox but he is playing as good as anyone in the league now and better than the rest. He is so hot right now that people are already considering him as an early MVP candidate.

After going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs Monday night, Berkman is tied for first in the National League in homers and leads in RBIs, runs, total bases, slugging percentage, extra-base hits, doubles and home batting average. He is second in batting average, hits and on-base percentage.

Despite a tender groin muscle, Berkman has 13 home runs, 38 RBIs, 42 runs, 55 hits, an .800 slugging percentage and 30 extra-base hits.

Over the last week, Berkman hit a major-league best .682 (15-for-22) with 10 runs, two doubles, a 1.136 slugging percentage and a .741 on-base percentage.

With guys like Albert Pujols and Ryan Howard in his league, it’s going to be tough but his hitting has helped lead the Astros to a decent record of 22-17 and in competition for first in the division.
