Marc Emery’s Prosecutor Is Finally Coming To His Senses

John McKay, you might know him as the man who fought to bring down Marc “Prince of Pot” Emery, who is now facing a possible 5 year stint in Federal prison for selling seeds to U.S. citizens, is now coming to his senses.

In a special write up he did for The Seattle Times he says:

Our marijuana policy is dangerous and wrong and should be changed through the legislative process to better protect the public safety.

Congress has failed to recognize what many already know about our policy of criminal prohibition of marijuana — it has utterly failed. Listed by the U.S. government as a “Schedule One” drug alongside heroin, the demand for marijuana in this country for decades has outpaced the ability of law enforcement to eliminate it. Perhaps this is because millions of Americans smoke pot regularly and international drug cartels, violent gangs and street pushers work hard to reap the profits

It’s about time that a politician of his status, who has fought so hard against marijuana, to come to the realization and publicly say that current laws are a joke and you can’t put cannabis in the same category as heroin and meth because the effects, both long term and short term, are in no way similar.

At the end of his article John lists 3 things that need to be done to ensure the safety of the public. First, he says that the government needs to really think about what they are doing, millions of Americans smoke cannabis and to keep it illegal is a battle that they can’t win, they need to just admit defeat and write up a new policy for law enforcement on how to deal with pot.

Second, John says that we need to ignore all of the propaganda from the 1930s ie. The Reefer Madness Era. We need to start really learning about the effects of cannabis through science and gather the real facts.

And lastly he goes on to say that we need to really consider heavily regulating and taxing Cannabis Clubs/Shops and makes sure that it is only sold to adults.

With such a large figure in the war against marijuana coming out basically saying, “we have failed, now it’s time to do what should have been done a long time ago” is huge. This could possibly encourage others to speak up about how the government has failed in  the fight against marijuana.

It is very obvious that John McKay still holds a strong dislike for marijuana and marijuana smokers but he also realizes that current laws are more dangerous for the public than pot.
