Mets push back Pedro Martinez’s return: Pedro won’t be back anytime soon

pedro-hurt.jpgThe Mets are struggling right now and when it rains it pours. Pedro Martinez’s strained hamstring may sideline him until at least mid-may and possibly into June.

The Mets originally said that the 36 year old would only miss 4-6 weeks when he strained his hamstring on April 1st but that has since been ruled out. Pedro will be out for longer and their 5-6 record is not helping.

Mets General Manager Omar Minaya would much rather be safe than sorry:

“We’re definitely going to be more conservative with him,” Mets general manager Omar Minaya told the newspaper. “With hamstrings, you just never know. We’ve got to be careful.”

It’s probably better this way that he is hurt now and still will have an opportunity to return as opposed to last year when he didn’t comeback until very late in the season adn wasn’t able to stop the Mets from their historic collapse.
