MJ’s Book Look: How to Smoke Pot (Properly)

I was put off by the title of this book.  Which would have been my loss if my emotional reaction kept me from reading this wonderful book about where things are — right now — in the story of the re-legalization of cannabis. This work will be one people refer to when they talk about cannabis re-legalization 2015 – 2016.  We all know the process is not complete and there is still work to be done.  But that work is underway, worldwide.

Author David Bienenstock has been an editor at High Times and is a producer in the new cannabis media.  The tone of this work conveys his deep reverence for the plant.  Bienenstock explains early in the book that “smoking pot properly can help most people learn to live a more authentic, rewarding life.”  Very true.

This work, while addressing the expected guidebook topics like a bit of history, a bit of headiquette, instruction on “How to Roll a Joint (Properly),” also touches on some of the less-oft discussed aspects of having cannabis in your life.  There is a chapter on “Cannabis & Creativity,” a section on cannabis as an aphrodisiac, “Travel” and a discussion of “Should I eat that pot brownie prior to boarding this plane?”.  The closing chapter, “Keep Pot Weird” takes a look at, along with many other ideas, being a responsible pot-consuming new mom or dad.  I had never given that a first thought.

It’s in the “weird” chapter that the reader gets asked, “Why am I getting high?’  If that thought has ever engaged your mind, high or otherwise, you will enjoy this book.  I certainly did.
