New “High” in Admitted Cannabis Consumers

Here’s another new high-water mark — more people admit to cannabis use than ever before.

Forty-four percent of Americans age 18 and older say that they have consumed cannabis, according to nationwide polling data reported by Gallup. The figure is the highest percentage of self-reported use ever documented by Gallup pollsters, who began asking the question in 1969. At that time, only 4% of respondents admitted to having ever tried cannabis.

Men (47%) were more likely than women (35%) to admit having used cannabis. Males (13%) were also more than twice as likely as females (6%) to identify themselves as current marijuana users. Democrats (12%) and Independents (11%) nearly equally identified as active cannabis consumers, while virtually no Republicans (1%) did so.

Americans across all education and income groups were nearly equally as likely to say they had tried marijuana at some point in their lives, pollsters reported.

Let’s remember self-reported data is its own special category. I say the actual figure is higher. To see Gallup’s data for yourself, GO HERE.
