Under a new provision, federal agents can no longer raid medical marijuana dispensaries where medical marijuana is legalized. The law was included in the spending law signed by President Obama in December of 2014.
The law is a step forward in the push to legalize marijuana in the U.S. and puts an end to the battle between the federal government and individual states. Despite the fact that medical marijuana has been legalized in 23 states and D.C., it’s still classified as a Schedule I drug – the same category as LSD and heroin.
Before the law was enacted, federal agents could shut down dispensaries that were opened legally on the state-level. Although agents have kept their distance, the measure prohibits federal agents from taking advantage of this loophole. In addition to this, the federal government can’t interfere with states implementing medical marijuana laws.
The law is a victory for weed shop owners and marijuana advocates all across the country. For those who are considering opening dispensaries, the measure adds an extra layer of protection and peace of mind.
Before the law, owners of cannabis clubs and dispensaries would operate in fear of the federal government shutting them down for any number of reasons.
Now that the law has been enacted, more dispensaries will pop up in cities and states where medical marijuana is legalized. With regulations still being murky at best, it can be a challenge to find great dispensaries.
How to Find the Right Dispensary
In some states, you’ll find dispensaries on every street corner. How can you find the right one for you? You can start out by compiling a list of nearby dispensaries through a site like Weedy, and then narrowing your choices down from there.
There are a few things you need to keep in mind when looking for a shop:
- Quality: Above anything else, quality is the most important thing to consider. And understanding your usage will help, too. Knowing the different strains and potency of those strains offered will help you find a shop that has exactly what you need. It’s also important to make sure that the buds meet your quality requirements.
- Variety: Look for dispensaries that offer a large selection with at least 20 different strains. This way, you have a variety to choose from, and if you build up a tolerance to one strain, you can try another.
- Price: Of course, price is also a factor. Costs will vary depending on the state, strain and shop. Even if you’re on a tight budget, you’re sure to find dispensaries that offer great quality cannabis at a price you can afford.
