Devils 5 – Hurricanes 1

The Devils have managed to perservere past a slow start to move into a threeway battle for the number 1 spot in the east. The Devils are currently tied with the Senators and the Canadiens with 73 points each. Thats not even mentioning the Pens who are just two points behind the leaders.

Travis Zajac had a goal and an assist, to help the Devils beat the Hurricanes 5-1. Mike Mottau, Jay Pandolfo, Johnny Oduya and Zach Parise also scored for the Devils.

“You have three teams tied up there,” Brodeur said. “For us, Pittsburgh is only two points away and other teams are going to challenge us. We just want to move forward and not get overwhelmed by the situation.”

The Hurricanes would be alright if they didn’t play the Devils. In their last 6 games they are 4-2 but those two losses were both blowouts against New Jersey. The last time they played on Feb 9th the Devils beat the Canes 6-1. Hopefully they can avoid them, for their sake.

Red Wings 4 – Avalanche 0

It took Chris Chelios scoring for the first time in four months and Chris Osgood only having the face 18 shots for the Red Wings to finally get out of their funk. The NHL’s best team was on a losing streak of 6 games.

Chelios and Valtteri Filppula got Detroit off to a fast start by scoring first period goals and the Wings never looked back. This was Chris Osgood’s 47th career shutout.

The Red Wings couldn’t have played the Avs soon enough. They had been thouroughly outplayed in their last 6 games but they’ve had the Avs number this year, sweeping them in their four games this year. If only they could play they all year.

• Freddy Meyer capped New York’s three-goal, third-period rally with 8:41 left, taking advantage of injured San Jose goalie Evgeni Nabokov in the Islanders’ 3-2 victory over the Sharks.
• Radim Vrbata scored a goal, assisted on two others and Phoenix won 4-0 for Wayne Gretzky’s 100th victory as coach.
