The terrifying reality is that one of the people featured in this on-going column is going to be the next president. We seek to judge what that fact might mean for cannabis re-legalization. In no particular order:
- Democratic presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders, called for ending the prohibition on marijuana Wednesday evening at an event for college students at George Mason University in Northern Virginia.
- “In my view, the time is long overdue for us to remove the federal prohibition on marijuana,” Sanders, in which students replied with cheers. “In my view, states should have the right to regulate marijuana the same way that state and local laws now govern the sale of alcohol and tobacco.”

Next up, Rand Paul:
- “I’m not here to advocate for marijuana,” Paul added. “But I’m here to advocate for freedom. And you know what, if I’m president I’m going to leave Colorado the hell alone.”
- The line won Paul big applause from roughly 200 students and supporters in the crowd at the University of Colorado-Denver during this particular speech.

We repeat our earlier threat — one of these people may become president. Pay attention.
