Research Shows That Cannabis use DOES NOT lower IQ

It is a common belief that cannabis use is correlated with a decreased IQ and poor academic performance—not anymore. The Journal of Psychopharmacology has released a study that shows that there is no correlation between cannabis use and a lower IQ/ poor academic performance.

The group studied the association between cannabis use, IQ, academic achievement, and brain activity among a group of 2235 adolescents. They found that 24% of 15 year olds admitted to trying cannabis at least once. The research group constructed a series of linear regressions that displayed the associated relationships before and after adolescents began using cannabis. The Data showed the relationship between cannabis use and IQ at the age of 15, and academic performance at the age of 16.

The study found that there was no difference in IQ, Academic performance, and brain activity between those who used cannabis more than 50 times and those who had never used cannabis.

However, The study did find that there is a correlation between adolescent’s who smoke cigarettes and a lower IQ/ poorer academic performance. You can click here to read the overview of the research.
