Rhode Island Representative Tries Again to Decriminalize Cannabis

My intent with this legislation remains the same, to provide some relief to the taxpayers of our state…in these difficult times, we must look for ways to cut costs wherever we can. Rhode Islanders should not be footing the bill to keep people in jail due to simple possession charges. It’s a huge waste of taxpayer dollars.

Words spoken from Rhode Island Rep. John Edwards has he takes a second stab at decriminalizing marijuana in his state. With being in possession of an ounce in RI punishable with a $500 fine and up to a year in jail, Edwards proposed in a official press release made today, to give possession of up to an ounce a fine not to exceed $150.  When housing a prisoner in the ACI costing $44,000 a year, Edwards projects saving between $1 and 4 million a year in law enforcement costs.

Its good to see politicians noticing how expensive petty marijuana offenses are on the state.
