We’ve mentioned roaches before, but those roaches you keep lying around the house don’t need to be your bask-up plan when funds are running low. If you’re an actual artist, instead of just someone that gets high and lies around the house (nothing wrong with that though), then Cliff Maynard may be someone you’ve heard about before. Even if you do lie around the house or the dorm room or wherever you call home, read on to check out the insane ish Cliff is putting together with just a bunch of roaches.Toke of the Town spoke with Cliff about his passion for roach inspired mosaics. He’s a tattoo artist by day, but by night he creates some of the illest art around. You can check out his myspace page, but we’ll show you some of our favorites below.
Cliff’s a student at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and a recent discussion of mosaics inspired his creations, which feature classic rockers like Jimi Hendrix and Jerry Garcia as well as the estimable Snoop Dogg and Method Man (no word yet on whether Redman is in the works). He’s going in an activist direction for his upcoming works as he told Toke of the Town:
‘”The next project that’s about to be done is Jack Herer,’ Cliff told Toke of the Town. ‘Then a Marc and Jodie Emery. I decided to do an ‘activists’ series of portraits. It’ll include Ed Rosenthal, Rev. Eddy Lepp, Richard Lee of Oaksterdam, and I’ll probably do a Rick Simpson at some point…”‘
Cliff had been worried about the legal ramifications of his work, which is why, until recently, he was relatively unknown. “I’m always a little worried that I may run in to [sic] some trouble for my art,” Cliff told Mids Magazine. “That’s why I didn’t take my work public sooner. I think times are changing though. The marijuana movement has been winning battles left and right.”
Cheech summed up his thoughts on the work perfectly: ‘”Creative way to dispose of roaches, man!”‘
