Ronda Rousey Speaks Out On Nick Diaz 5-Year Suspension From UFC

During the press conference for UFC 193 in Melbourna, Australia, UFC’s Bantamweight Champion and breakout start Ronda Rousey used the platform to address the recent 5-year suspension of Nick Diaz from the UFC.

Nick Diaz official punishment from the Nevada State Athletic Commission & Ultimate Fighting Championship:
(x)60 months suspension
(x)$165,000 fine

What makes this story noteworthy is that Rousey wasn’t even asked about this incident. She took it upon herself to address this issue. Having someone with as far-reaching of a voice as Ronda speak positively about cannabis consumption is strides forward in helping dispell the inaccurate stigma that comes with casual, responsible marijuana use. Check the rundown of her exact words during yesterday’s UFC 193 press conference below:

I’m sorry, I know no one asked me anything but I have to say something…It’s so not right for [Diaz] to be suspended five years for marijuana. I’m against them testing for any weed at all. It’s not a performance-enhancing drug. It has nothing to do with athletic competition, and it’s only tested for political reasons so they say, ‘Oh, it’s only for your safety so you’re not hurting yourself when you’re out there.’ So why don’t they test for all the other things that could possibly hurt us that we could be under the influence of while we’re out there?

After articulating some of the most objective views on cannabis use, the best Ronda Rousey quote came toward the end and should be referenced from now until forevermore:

I don’t think marijuana should be part of the conversation at all. I think it’s an invasion of privacy for them to test for it, and they have no right.

NOTE: Nick Diaz has tested positive for cannabis three times all together in his professional MMA career. First time was back in 2007 after a landmark win against Takenori Gomi while in the Pride FC league. Second official violation was in May 2012 during a post-fight drug test at UFC 143 after losing to Carlos Condit; who became the Weltherweight Interim Champion. This most recent time came in January 2015 after losing to Anderson Silva at UFC 183 in another post-fight drug test.

Check out this interview with Ronda earlier in the year where she spoke about female popularity in combat sports, Dragon Ball Z, & her favorite part of the new UFC/Reebok uniform deal:
