Smokeout Festival Was Beyond Amazing (HMJ Wrap Up)

The HIGHLY anticipated Smokeout Festival took place last Saturday, March 3rd in sunny San Bernardino, CA and it surpassed all expectations of awesomeness. If you are a regular reader of HMJ then you undoubtedly heard about it because we haven’t talked about anything else for nearly two weeks.

Five members of the HMJ team made the trip from various parts of the country and the team did an amazing job considering all the circumstances surrounding our attendance. The attendees were Tribute, Doodette, Babycorn, Semi, and myself.

I arrived in Southern California on the Thursday before and the trip immediately started out well for me. At the airport I met a stripper from Detroit who happened to be flying to the same place as me. When we landed she couldn’t get in touch with the friend she was supposed to meet so she came back to the hotel with me. No sex, lapdances or making it rain occurred because her friend called shortly after but not before she got the hotel guy to hook us up with some Cali bud. Before she left she smoked me up and left the rest of the trees (that she bought) with me so I wasn’t that disappointed.

This was the view from the hotel room. Beautiful.

From then on it was nothing but preparation for Smokeout, taking care of interviews we scheduled for Friday and partaking in some of the best buds Cali has to offer. Here are some shots from the scene the night before as HMJ was plotting out the victory for the next day.

Saturday came and in the beginning it seemed like everything was going to fall apart. Our shirts and stickers didn’t arrive on time, our vending space fell through (our fault), and the team didn’t have to opportunity to meet up and get on the same page before the show so we just had to go off instinct.

Despite the challenges, as soon as it was gametime the team executed on unprecedented levels. The fact that we had no vending spot allowed the team to focus on on getting more interviews, getting website drops from artists, getting amazing pictures, interacting with many many fans, and seeing a few shows.

One of the more interesting scenarios was when I met and smoked with Curren$y. We reached out and scheduled an interview for after his set long before the show but the rest of the team and I got separated when it came time to actually do it. No one had phone service because of thousands of tweeters in a small area so I couldn’t reach any of them.

So I took matters into my own hands and went to the artist trailers in search of Spitta. After meeting with Nipsey Hussle and Mobb Deep I saw Curren$y’s manager, Mousa who directed me to the trailer. I went, met all the jets, smoked a cone for the first time, got him to roll up one on an HMJ card and give us a drop. (All artist drop videos coming very soon)

Shouts to the big homey for that. Though it was disappointing to not get the full interview, it was an awesome scenario considering that I wasn’t even scheduled to conduct the interview.

After lots of hard work the team got to enjoy some of the final sets. Being a HUGE Korn fan growing up, seeing their headlining set was not only incredible but spiritually enhancing. Shouts to the guy who was standing next to me who kept pushing off the moshers stopping them from ruining my buzz as well. Things got a little hectic out there.

Overall the day was incredible and if you were there then you got to experience what will definitely go down as one of the best cannabis related events of the year. All reports were that the shows were incredible. I heard Wiz, Rusko, Sublime, Fashawn, Ritmo Machine, and Dirty Heads all had incredible sets. I want to give a HUGE thank you to all the people from Guerilla Union as well as the team for being so kick ass. We will be working with guerilla union a lot in the future for cover their other events including including paid dues and rock the bells. Make sure you make your preparations to attend those events NOW.

2012 is going to be an amazing year for HMJ. Keep an eye out this weekend for more post coverage including interviews and the video we are compiling with a of our footage.
