Observe And Report is intense. Some seriously fucked up stuff goes down in this movie and that is just one of the reason’s that I enjoyed it so much. Lots of dark humor make this movie hilarious, but the incredible acting is what makes it memorable.

Today, September 22nd, Observe and Report comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray. And as always, I had a date with a girl I know named Mary Jane as the opening credits rolled.

What I Smoked: One Bong

Now honestly, my skull slider can hold about half an 1/8er if it’s ground up good. I fill up my slider, and it will last me about 2 days until its gone (as long as I’m by myself). I filled it up and smoked about half a skull-full, which gets me perfectly baked for while. And since the seasons are starting to change, my hick-town started selling fresh apple cider. I couldn’t resist, so I had a nice glass full of that to cure the dry mouth.

Plot: Mall security guard Ronnie Barnhardt is called into action to stop a flasher from turning shopper’s paradise into his personal peep show. But when Barnhardt can’t bring the culprit to justice, a surly police detective, is recruited to close the case.

Written and directed by Jody Hill who previously made the underground hit The Foot Fist Way, shows what kind of story he can craft if he’s given a budget. And it is fantastic.  His gift is making truly funny black comedies, and I hope he continues his career path in this direction. (On a side note, his TV show Eastbound & Down is also just as entertaining as this film)

But back to the movie, the obvious stand out is Seth Rogen, who plays Ronnie, the focus of the story. (Rogen is a real life stoner, so I know he was thinking of all the pot heads at home watching this movie) For the first time, he actually has to act and I for one, wasn’t let down. Surprised actually. He’s played the goofy stoner role his whole career, and now he’s playing a emotionally unstable mall cop with mommy issues. Every scene he’s in is full of cringe-worthy laughter, and that’s not a put down.

When I mentioned the “dark humor” in this movie, you need to know I’m not sugar-coating the meaning of “dark humor”.  It’s shockingly violent (also not a put down), vulgar, and a tad bit disturbing at times. Hardcore drug use, full frontal male nudity, and a bit of rape are just the tip of the black comedy iceberg. Personally I enjoy this kind of humor, but I know it’s not for everyone. But as long as your baked, you’ll laugh without question.

The film is easily comparable to Taxi Driver, as Ronnie is basically Travis Bickle as a mall cop. Ronnie loves his guns, has an irrational love for a girl who finds him gross, and has a final showdown at the end, that makes him a hero… at least in his own eyes. Observe and Report is a hilarious story with dark soul. But at least it has a soul.

Favorite Scene: Ronnie and his #2 Dennis, graphically beat the living shit out of some skateboarders during a montage featuring intravenous drug use. (It’s just as bad-ass as it sounds)

Watch Stoned or Sober?: Stoned. Weed only makes the funny parts funnier.

Overall Score: 9 outta 10

Good Times,

Kyler Durden
