Study Finds THC kills Cancer Cells (DEA will still arrest cancer patients smoking herb)

1

A recent study shows THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, kills cancer cells. This is just another reminder herb is medically relevant, and can help those who suffer from cancer among other ailments. Find out more specifics about the studies findings after the jump.

Simply put, “Medicinal marijuana oil made from cannabis buds, when ingested thrice daily, for two months, will destroy leukemia and cancer cells.”

Keep in mind that smoking marijuana leads to cancer-causing carcinogens (forgive the alliteration), but when taking the medical marijuana oil in various pastries can lead to the death of leukemia and cancer cells. The technical findings are “Plant-derived cannabinoids, including Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), induce apoptosis in leukemic cells, although the precise mechanism remains unclear.”

So they’re not really sure why the THC is killing leukemic cells, but they know it does. Apoptosis is the process of programmed cell death.

This is great news, but you’re still going to jail if you get caught with a lot of marijuana.

Where is this study? I would like to post this article on my site and link to this as the source, but I see no reference to the study you got this information from.

Smoked marijuana does NOT contain significant levels of carcinogens; in fact other studies continually show that smoked cannabis does reduce the risk of various cancers. I don't believe there has ever been a peer-reviewed study that shows that cannabis, in any form, causes or increases the risk of any form of cancer. If this is not true, I would like to see the data.

It is not helpful to post information about a study and then add something of your own beliefs to the announcement making it seem like this is part the study. In this case you added, " when taking the medical marijuana oil in various pastries can lead to the death of leukemia and cancer cells". I'm sure you mean well but this is not a good way to get information out. Also you should put a link to the original article so people can look it up for themselves.

One can forgive the alliteration, but surely not the tautology.

This study is from 2006. Not exactly recent.

Where to begin to discuss the inaccuracies of this post? The author of this post leaves out the fact that this was an in vitro (not in a living organism) experiment with a specific type of cancer cell (specifically leukemia). So, it is not certain these results will generalize to in vivo (in an organism) studies or to other cancers.

The first quote, "Medicinal marijuana oil made from cannabis buds, when ingested thrice daily, for two months, will destroy leukemia and cancer cells" is a distorted conclusion of the study and not made by the authors. Additionally, science doesn't "prove" anything, it can only refute. Second, this post refers to only one study.

I will say that the post author is correct in saying smoking marijuana produces carcinogens and could potentially cause cancer, though it is difficult to tease out what is due to marijuana and what might be due to cigarette smoking. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11157422 www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19586351

Finally, it does not follow that because something could be medically relevant it should be legalized or even medically desirable. First, cocaine can be used as an anesthetic and heroin can be used as a analgesic, but it doesn't follow that they should be legalized for recreational use. Second, even if marijuana can be used to fight one type of cancer, it doesn't mean that it won't raise the risk of other cancers or other fatal conditions.

    • just saying…

Not to agree or disagree with you, but both of the links you posted are not actual studies. Their "method" was to read articles about marijuana use, and describe what those articles said was bad about it. Isome of those other "studies" could have been the exact same thing. In other words, it could quite easily be just a chain of posted results, with the end result of only increasing the number of scientific papers that say marijuana is bad.

Along with that, neither article mentions their sources, and they could have easily used only articles that put marijuana in a bad light, or even fabricate facts based off of popular belief.

  • Tyrel

They are older studies. I'll admit to missing that. I did link to the original source in the post, but you may have missed it since the links aren't highlighted as well as they could be. We'll work at fixing that issue.
