The High Times Bonghitters. Incredible team name.

That was the name of the High Times softball team that played in championship game of the softball tournament for New York City media outlets that wrapped up its season over the weekend.

The game started at one, but of course I was late. I arrived right on time to see the Bonghitters cap an amazing comeback victory in the qualifying game against Forbes Magazine. It was the bottom of the 9th inning, the score was tied, and one of the Bonghitters hit a clutch single that brought in the game winning run with a base hit.  Softball games usually go 7 innings so the game was already in extra innings but I got there right on time for the key play.

The championship game pitted the Bonghitters against Wall Street Journal who defeated WNYC to make it there.  This game was drama filled, as well —- and it also went into extra innings.  This grueling 13 inning game saw the Wall Street Journal jump out to an early lead in the first inning.  High times pulled even and the WSJ tacked on one more run during the game.

Then the real drama started late in the game.

We noticed the clock was approaching 4:20 as we went into the bottom of the 7th inning with the Bonghitters down 2-1.

The Bonghitters scored a game tying run right on 4:20 at the dot. This came as a result of several errors defensive errors by WSJ, on the same play.  It was as if the weed gods came down and made them drop the ball like in Angels in the Outfield.

The weed gods clocked out after 4:20, however.  The pitching duel continued at a 2-2 tie for 13 innings until the WSJ scored two runs in the top of the 13th, by taking advantage of a fatigued pitcher.  The Bonghitters scratched back for one additional run but they were just too cashed in the end, physically.  The game ended with a 4-3 victory for WSJ.

It’s a good thing the game wrapped when it did because we watched and got out of central park as the tornado rolled in. Crazy day!
