The DEA has put the official nail in the coffin of an application submitted by Massachusetts University seeking permission to grow cannabis to be used for research purposes. Currently, the only entity that can legally grow marijuana in the United States is the (NIDA) National Institute of Drug Abuse. The Federal entity refused to accept their own Federal judicial opinion in support of granting UMass the legal right to cultivate cannabis. Why would NIDA and the DEA do such a thing? It could be because it directly conflicts with NIDA’s monopoly on cannabis cultivation and the mission of the DEA to restrict and convict. In 2010, a NIDA spokesperson gave an interview with the New York Times where they disclosed exactly what their mission isn’t.
“We generally do not fund research focused on the potential beneficial medical effects of marijuana.”
Earlier in the year the DEA denied a nearly decade old petition to reclassify cannabis stating they could find no medical benefit to the plant. We have to ask our government why they are treating research and the process of law with such disregard. When confronted with documentation, demand for access, and changing public opinion our government is telling us ‘No’, and when we ask why, the answer is now simply, “because I said so”.
And we all know there is no good come back for that answer.
