Earlier this week Attorney General Holder sent a letter to the former heads of the DEA in which he promised that the Justice Department would continue to enforce federal marijuana laws in California, even if the state’s voters approve Proposition 19 (which we all know would make marijuana legal for all adults 21 or older and allow localities to tax and regulate the sale of cannabis)
“We will vigorously enforce the [Controlled Substances Act] against those individuals and organizations that possess, manufacture or distribute marijuana for recreational use, even if such activities are permitted under state law,” Holder wrote in the letter, as reported by The Associated Press.
Looks like we’ve got a new enemy of the state in the fight for legalization in California. I’m curious to see what happens when Prop. 19 passes, is this guy gonna do his best to keep his word? Will voting Yes on Prop 19 have no effect? I can’t see things going smoothly when Prop 19 passes and this guy keeps his word on not changing policy regardless of the outcome of the November 2nd vote.
