Virginia Decriminalization Bill Shot Down Again

Today in chambers House Bill 1443 was rejected. The bill, proposed by Harvey Morgan, looked to make marijuana possession a non-criminal offense. Virginia law currently gives marijuana possession various fines and jail time, but Morgan aimed to remove the possibility of prison from the table.

Morgan is not discouraged though and has been vocal about repeating this process and says:

“I’m a pharmacist. I’m not a young person. I’m considered relatively conservative, and I’m a Republican…I think if anybody can introduce a bill like that, it ought to be somebody in my category.”

Note that Morgan is a 80-year-old Republican who has served in the Virginia House of Delegates for the last 32 years and is also quick to point out that he himself is not a marijuana user; just some who doesn’t want a person who has been convicted of marijuana-related crimes to not a have shot to better themselves or hinder their chances for employment with certain jobs.
