If you're like me, then you probably would love to work at a dispensary in Colorado, but there's quite a process you have to go through in order to legally work for one.
Now, there's an easy way and a hard way to get badged to legally work in the marijuana industry, depending on where you live, so I'll summarize both options in a moment.
But either way you look at it, you're going to need to have $75 dollars in cash on you, a Colorado driver's license (which I believe would cover both your identification and proof of residency), a filled-out support employee application, and you'll need to get yourself to 455 Sherman Street, Suite 390 in Denver, because that's the only location to get your badge at the moment. Just make sure that you make the trip between the time of 8 AM to 5 PM, and it's Monday through Friday.
So, if you live in Denver the following information might not be an issue for you but, unless you were already hired by a dispensary (or any other related business), plan on going to the Marijuana Enforcement Division Headquarters in Denver at least 4 to 6 times, before you come home with a badge.
Why would it take so many trips?
Well for one, so many people attempt to get badged every day that they're open, so it's hard to service the whole state through just one office.
And secondly, instead of sending you home to await results that will be mailed to you, they complete all the background checks, badge creation and whatever else needs to be done, right on the spot, so that you can walk out of there with your badge, if approved.
But since those background checks, and other services, take so long to complete, they have to limit how many people they can give a badge to each day. So, if you aren't already hired at a dispensary and they haven't called someone they know at the MED Headquarters, then you'll have to show up in Denver a number of times before you're ensured that you'll be seen. Now, you're required to draw a number to be entered into a lottery, which randomly decides who will be seen that day, instead of first come first served. So, don't camp out outside! And once you show that you've racked up enough consecutive days without being seen, they'll ensure that you are put through the process, since you have attempted so many times already.
But somehow, if a licensed business wants to employ you and calls ahead to someone they know in the office, it'll only take one trip to Denver, and you'll walk out with your badge that day, if you are approved. I guess it shows that there's a true demand for you to be badged, and they're happy to glide you right through the process, instead of holding up operations at your place of employment.
The direction I'm headed...
And luckily for me, I have an interview lined up with someone who I hope will be my new boss, so that I can avoid having to make so many trips to Denver, before getting badged.
He's already mentioned calling the office for me, and he seems like he'd be a great guy to work for, so in future Wookwok Wakenings you may hear stories of me delivering such delicious items as the ones pictured on the right, to local dispensaries.
I've got an interesting week ahead of me, but I hope this information will help many others get badged a lot quicker, so that we're all happily employed at a job we love.
