Web Series: Sex Drugs and Jazz (Episode 4)

I want to kick myself in the ass for not seeing the emails from Cameron, who writes and directs this web series. I posted the first episode and was damn excited for the rest of the season. Even though the first episode premiered over a year ago. I still can’t believe I missed the last three. I must of been been smoking way too much to miss his emails. Or maybe he never emailed? I don’t even know anymore people. I’m just irritated I’ve missed three episodes now. But no need to worry about me or that. I present to you Greenies episode 4 “We’re Getting The Band Back Together” of Sex Drugs and Jazz. I enjoyed the first episode a lot and cannot wait to watch the next three episodes.

The series intertwines stories of the marijuana and music subcultures in New York City. Jazz legend Sonny Rollins noted that Jazz has always “struggled to survive.” Washington continues the fight for its’ survival and revival by creating a stoner comedy with broad appeal. The series is a love letter to New York, Brooklyn, Jazz fanatics, Jazz greats, live music lovers, bands, musicians, lovers of stoner comedies, and pro marijuana enthusiasts.

This seems like the perfect thing for the Greenies and online marijuana world. A web series about music and weed. A comedy that will have you laughing along with a ton of music and weed. What more could a pothead ask for? Clearly food, but that’s not the point. You Greenies seemed to like it a lot from the comment section on the first post.

All the episodes are below from the first to the fourth (fourth is above). Plus I’ve added some more info about the entire show thanks to Cameron.

The Soundtrack:

At its heart, Sex Drugs and Jazz is all about the music. Good music is timeless, and lives on forever when done right. And Jazz, when done right, lends itself to be this type of music. Even after the thousandth listen to Louis Armstrong’s West End Blues or  Gillespie’s, Rollin’s, and Stitt’s Sunny Side of the Street, something new and ingenious will be revealed with each listen.

The accompanying soundtrack to the first season of Sex Drugs and Jazz hopes to present original music that will stand the test of time.  On all of the various styles of music on the soundtrack Reggae, Blues, Jazz, Gypsy Jazz, Funk and Hip Hop – the influence and inspiration of Blues and Jazz is evident – what we like to call Roots Jazz.

The first half of the soundtrack is heavily influenced by the Gypsy Jazz Manouche style. Our main man in the show Neptune is a gifted gypsy jazz guitar player, and the soundtrack reflects the hot jazz manouche style. Started by the godfather of Gypsy Jazz Django Reinhardt, gypsy jazz is a mix of European gypsy music, and American Jazz, and is unmistakable when you hear it.  Our featured gypsy jazz band on the soundtrack is the Hot Club of San Francisco, lead by the guitar virtuoso Paul Mehling. The second half of the soundtrack brings listeners to modern day New York City, with Hip Hop, Funk and World jams performed by sizzling bands currently on the scene throughout the five boroughs.

Good music is good music. Sex Drugs and Jazz is here to present you with some ‘effin good music.

Director’s Statement:

The tunes, ideas, melodies, musicians and characters for the Sex Drugs and Jazz project came together while exploring and documenting the modern musical worlds of Brooklyn and San Francisco. I knew I wanted this project to be a comedy and I knew I wanted it to be about jazz. So out of it all came the Sex Drugs and Jazz story. The series tells the story of the musicians hustle.

Essentially my humble goal for this project is to to make a funny show that makes musicians proud while also attracting new folks who wouldn’t normally listen to jazz –  as well as introduce our audience groundbreaking  music and bands that aren’t  being heard in mainstream TV or radio. And wrap it all together in a fun comedy show.

An overreach trying to make jazz and comedy nerds happy and build a new audience? Perhaps. But I like a challenge. Who knows if it will work.

Hope you enjoy the show. And the soundtrack.

Support live music.

Jazz Lives.
