Out of California comes two sides to the story, only one of which can be true. Supporters of medicinal marijuana filed a petition with the city of Imperial Beach on Monday afternoon to enact an ordinance that would allow marijuana dispensaries to operate in their community. The city has said “no” to dispensaries because of a possible increase in crime. “Medical marijuana dispensaries have resulted in and/or caused an increase in crime, including burglaries, robberies, violence, illegal sales of marijuana to, and use of marijuana by minors and other persons without medical need,” dispensary opponents said. Say what?
In contrast, the proposed Safe Access Ordinance of Imperial Beach said that crime is “reduced by the presence of a Medical Cannabis Dispensing Collective (MCDC).” An analysis of dispensaries in nearby San Diego which was conducted last year found no measurable increase in crime. Always nice to see some research instead of spreading fear by crying wolf.
The dispensaries opponents also cite enforcement by the Department of Justice as a reason to deny dispensaries locally. The federal government renewed their efforts to crack down on dispensaries last fall.
As this story continues to unfold, HMJ promises to keep the Greenies informed. [image: google]
