What’s good Greenies and welcome to another insightful Wisdom Wednesday from me, ThisBuds4You. This week I’m gonna talk a bit about nutrients, in particular, a nutrient formula called “The Lucas Formula”. This is the most basic nutrient formula I’ve ever heard of or used, and it actually WORKS! You can use this formula from the seedling/cutting stage till the end of the flowering cycle. Yes, the same formula. Incredible, right?!? I was so used to having 10 bottles of all kinds of nutrient shit laying around, but the Lucas Formula really sticks with the K.I.S.S. method, Keep It Simple, Stoners.
The Lucas Formula is derived from Mel Frank’s targets (Mel Frank is the author of Marijuana Grower’s Insider’s Guide). His targets suggest a 100-100-200-60 goal for NPKMg values in bloom. Both General Hydroponics Flora Series nutrients and the FloraNova Bloom nutrient achieve Mel Frank’s targets without the use of additives. The Lucas Formula works best with reverse osmosis water, no adjusting of the pH is needed. If you’re using tap water you may need to adjust the pH, close to 5.8 is where we need to be.
Lucas Formula with FLORA SERIES
General Hydroponics makes a 3-part system called the FLORA series. It consists of FLORA GRO, [amazon_link id=”B000BT4696″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]FLORA MICRO[/amazon_link], and [amazon_link id=”B0012V3PO4″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]FLORA BLOOM[/amazon_link]. These are 3 products that can be used together throughout the entire grow. For the Lucas Formula we will only be using the Flora Micro and the Flora Bloom. Don’t buy the Flora Gro, it’s garbage.
Add 8ml of FLORA MICRO to 1 gallon of RO water, Mix
Add 16ml of FLORA BLOOM to 1 gallon of RO water, Mix
Lucas Formula with FloraNova
FloraNova is probably the easiest feeding plan available. If you’re using General Hydroponics’ [amazon_link id=”B001OK44VG” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]FloraNova Bloom[/amazon_link] 1-part system add 8ml of FloraNova per gallon of RO water and feed.
Boosters with the Lucas Formula
I like to add boosters to my nutrient mix even though it’s not necessary during the bloom cycle. I’ve tried many and found that [amazon_link id=”B003D4MSW8″ target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Bloombastic[/amazon_link] works best with the Lucas Formula. It’s kinda pricey, but maaaaaan it works great. It increased the resin production (for hash) by almost DOUBLE what I was yielding previously. Don’t sleep on the Bloombastic folks.
Lucas Formula in Coco
The Lucas Formula has to be tweaked slightly for use in Coco. Coco is a great grow medium (my preferred medium) but it has a tendency to have calcium and magnesium deficiency. To supplement for this we add [amazon_link id=”B000J2CUPW” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]CalMag[/amazon_link] or [amazon_link id=”B003UKT9EK” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Epsom Salt[/amazon_link] to the Lucas Formula and change the quantities slightly.
6ml of Flora Micro, and 9ml of Flora Bloom, per gallon of water, along with 1 gram of Epsom salt per water (or 1 tsp of CalMag)
Feeding Seedlings/Cuttings with the Lucas Formula
For young plants (< 4 weeks old) or cuttings, which may not be able to handle a full strength feeding formula, may require that you dilute the nutrient solution before feeding. This is OK, just make sure you keep the correct ratio when mixing. For example, 50% strength would be 4ml Micro and 8ml Bloom.
PPM Recommendations When Using Lucas Formula
Veg: 450-600 PPMs
Full Flower: 900-1000 PPMs
Mothers: 500 PPMs
