This week we’re going to talk about how to turbocharge your edibles using my super secret ingredient…soy lecithin. In my experience using soy lecithin when cooking with cannabis causes the high to come on faster and stronger but it doesn’t last as long as eating the same edibles without the addition of lecithin.
I’ve eaten non-soy lecithin brownies and waited almost 2 hours for the effects to kick in. Once they kicked in I was high for 12 hours. I went to sleep and woke up high. While that might be nice on the weekends, it’s not always convenient. When eating pot brownies with the addition of soy lecithin the effects are generally felt within 30-45 minutes and the high generally last 6-8 hours and is very intense. Why you should be adding lecithin to your edibles
THC is soluble in fat. Only water soluble substances can pass the intestine membrane. Fat is itself not water soluble because it is like THC, uncharged. So how does fat pass the intestine membrane? Fat absorption requires substances with a dipole character to build up vehicles which can connect at the outer surface with water (charged side) and at the inner surface with the fat and the THC (uncharged side). These vehicles are called micells and consists of bilesalts (dipole), phospholipids (dipole), fatty acids (uncharged) and THC (uncharged). Lecithin contains much of these phospholipids! Lecithin works in two ways, it emulsifies fat but more importantly I think is the ability of lecithin to build up micells.
Non-GMO soy lecithin can be found at your local health food store. I get 1-pound of soy lecithin for $10.99. When I’m making a pan of dank ass brownies, I use a 1/4 cup of soy lecithin. Try adding a few tablespoons to your next canna-concoction, let us know how it turns out in the comments below.
