Duration by route
| Route | Onset | Roughly how long |
|---|---|---|
| Inhaled | Minutes | Two to three hours. Fastest in, first out. |
| Sublingual oil | 15 to 45 minutes | Four to six hours, in two waves: what crosses under the tongue, then what is swallowed. |
| Capsule or gummy | 30 minutes to 2 hours | Four to six hours, flatter and later. |
| Topical | Local, if at all | Not a systemic window at all; reapplied as needed. |
These are ranges rather than numbers because the published pharmacokinetics are ranges. Dose, route, body composition, what you ate and how often you take it all move them.
Two questions, often confused
- How long does it do anything? The hours above, and for most of what people take CBD for the honest answer is that no trial has established there is an effect to time.
- How long does it stay in me? Much longer. CBD is lipophilic and accumulates in fat, and the reviewed literature reports elimination half-lives ranging from a couple of hours to more than a day depending on route and dosing.
The second question is the one that matters for drug testing, and it has a different answer for CBD than for the THC a test is actually looking for.
How repeated dosing changes it
A single dose is not the same experiment as a week of them. With regular dosing, concentrations accumulate until intake and elimination balance — which is why a daily routine reaches a steady level that a first dose does not, and why judging a product on its first day tells you least.
This is the pharmacological reason behind the advice to give anything a fortnight. It is not patience for its own sake: the concentration on day ten of the same dose is genuinely different from the concentration on day one.
What makes it last longer or shorter
| Factor | Which way it pushes |
|---|---|
| Food, especially fat | More of the dose absorbed, so more to eliminate. A high-fat meal raised peak concentration around fourteen-fold in a phase I trial. |
| Dose | Larger doses take longer to clear. |
| Frequency | Daily use accumulates; occasional use does not. |
| Body composition | CBD distributes into fat, which acts as a reservoir. |
| Other medicines | Shared liver enzymes cut both ways: CBD can slow their clearance and they can change its. |
What a drug test is looking for
Standard workplace tests screen for THC metabolites, not CBD. A pure isolate product should not produce a positive, and a full-spectrum product carries a trace of THC by design — which accumulates with daily use.
The labelling record makes this a real risk rather than a theoretical one. A 2017 JAMA analysis of 84 CBD extracts found around seven in ten inaccurately labelled, and some contained undeclared THC. If a test matters to you, isolate plus a batch certificate is the only combination that answers the question.
What "it wore off" usually means
People describe CBD wearing off when what has actually happened is that the thing they were watching moved on its own. Pain, tension and sleep quality all fluctuate hour to hour for reasons that have nothing to do with a supplement.
That is why a single afternoon is uninformative in both directions, and why the useful record is a fortnight of the same dose at the same time with the same measure written down.
Timing it for a purpose
- For sleep, an hour or two before bed if swallowed, since that is how long anything swallowed takes to arrive.
- For something predictable, like a flight or a talk, work backwards from the onset window for your route.
- For all-day use, split doses rather than doubling one, because the window is hours rather than a day.
- Keep the timing constant while you are still working out whether it does anything.
Tolerance, and whether it applies
People used to nicotine or THC ask whether the same thing happens here, and the honest answer is that nobody has studied it properly. What is known points away from it: tolerance to THC is a well-described adaptation at the CB1 receptor, which CBD does not activate in that way.
The closest thing to a test is the epilepsy programme, where people took large doses daily for months. If a dose stops seeming to do anything, raising it is a guess — and given that the one trial comparing CBD doses directly found the middle one working and the highest not, it is a guess with a reason to be wrong.
What half-life actually means
Half-life is the time for the concentration in blood to fall by half, and it is not the same as how long something works. A compound can be below the concentration that does anything while still being measurable, which is exactly the gap between the two questions at the top of this page.
It is also why the reviewed figures vary so widely: measured after a single inhalation, a single capsule or a week of daily dosing, the same molecule produces different numbers. Any page quoting one figure has picked a study and dropped the conditions.
A worked example
| If you take | Expect |
|---|---|
| A 25 mg capsule at 9pm on an empty stomach | Little in the blood before 10pm, a low peak, and most of it gone by the early hours. |
| The same capsule after a meal with fat in it | A substantially higher peak, on the phase I food-effect finding, and a longer tail. |
| The same capsule every night for two weeks | A steadier level than either single dose produces, which is the state worth judging. |
Where the numbers come from
The ranges on this page come from the reviewed pharmacokinetic literature in humans, which measures concentrations in blood. That is a solid foundation for onset and clearance and a weak one for how long something feels different, because the studies measuring feelings are the ones this field is short of.
Anything on the internet quoting a precise number of hours for how long CBD "lasts" has combined the two and rounded. The honest version is a range, a route, and a reason it varies.
Questions people ask
How long does CBD last?
Roughly two to six hours depending on route, with wide variation. Inhaled is the shortest, swallowed the longest and flattest, and sublingual sits between the two.
How long does CBD stay in your system?
Longer than it does anything. CBD is lipophilic and accumulates in fat, and reported elimination half-lives range from a couple of hours to more than a day depending on route and how regularly it is taken.
Will CBD fail a drug test?
Tests look for THC metabolites rather than CBD. Isolate should not produce a positive; full-spectrum products carry a trace of THC that accumulates with daily use, and testing has repeatedly found products with more THC than declared.
Why did it seem to stop working?
Most often because the thing being watched moved on its own — pain, tension and sleep all fluctuate hourly. A fortnight at the same dose with a measure written down each day separates the two far better than a single afternoon.
