CBD vape oil: how to tell one from another

CBD vape oil is propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin carrying CBD, and the difference between one bottle and the next is what the certificate says rather than what the flavour promises. Undeclared compounds have been found in this category more than once.

What the product actually is

Vape oil, e-liquid and vape juice are the same thing under three names: a carrier of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin, flavourings, and CBD. It is made to be heated in a coil and inhaled, and that is the whole of what separates it from the tincture in the dropper bottle beside it.

A CBD tincture is carried in MCT or hemp seed oil and is made to be swallowed. Putting one in a vape tank puts lipid droplets into your lungs, which is a documented route to the inflammatory response called exogenous lipoid pneumonia. If a bottle does not say e-liquid, vape or for inhalation, it is not this product.

Why the label is the whole comparison

A 2017 analysis in JAMA bought 84 CBD extracts online and tested them; around seven in ten were inaccurately labelled, some with substantially less CBD than stated, some with more, and some with THC the label did not mention.

Vape products have a worse finding of their own. Forensic chemists analysing commercially available CBD e-liquids reported, in Forensic Science International, products containing the synthetic cannabinoid 5F-ADB and, separately, dextromethorphan — neither declared. Compounds of that family act at the CB1 receptor far more powerfully than THC and have been linked to severe adverse events.

What a certificate should say

SectionWhy it matters
Cannabinoid content, including THCThe easy half, and the only half most brands publish. It should be a number, not "THC free".
Residual solventsWhat is left behind by extraction.
Heavy metalsCan come from hardware as well as from the plant.
PesticidesHemp is an agricultural crop and is treated like one.
What was looked for and not foundThe section that would have caught the undeclared synthetics above. Its absence is the tell.

It should also carry a date and a batch code that matches the bottle in your hand. A generic laboratory page on a website is not a certificate; it is a picture of one.

Three things that change it

  • The PG to VG ratio. More propylene glycol carries flavour and gives a sharper throat hit; more vegetable glycerin makes thicker, smoother vapour. Neither changes the CBD.
  • Spectrum. Full spectrum keeps a trace of THC, broad spectrum removes it, isolate is CBD alone. On an inhaled product where a drug test may matter, this is the row to read.
  • Milligrams per bottle, and the bottle size. Together they give milligrams per millilitre, which is the only figure that compares two products.

Working out what a tankful is

The arithmetic is rough and almost nobody does it. A 30 ml bottle holding 1000 mg is about 33 mg per millilitre; a 2 ml tank therefore holds about 66 mg, spread over however many sessions that takes. A cartridge holding 200 mg in 1 ml delivers roughly one to two milligrams a puff.

The useful consequence is that inhaled servings are small numbers. Somebody comparing a few puffs with a 25 mg gummy is comparing amounts that differ by an order of magnitude — before any difference in how much of each reaches the blood.

What inhaling changes

Inhaled CBD skips the gut and the liver, so more of it reaches the blood and it arrives within minutes rather than over an hour or two. It also leaves faster. That makes inhalation the better tool for finding out whether anything happens at all, and the worse one for taking a consistent amount every day.

There is no established dose of CBD for any over-the-counter purpose by any route, and inhalation is the route where the amount taken is least knowable.

What the hardware does to the liquid

SettingWhat it changes
Power or voltageMore vapour per puff, and more thermal degradation of the carrier. Research in the New England Journal of Medicine found formaldehyde-releasing compounds rising sharply with voltage.
Coil conditionA burnt taste is dry wick being heated rather than liquid. It is a signal to change the coil, not to pull harder.
AirflowA tighter draw runs cooler and slower; wide open delivers more per second.

Run the lowest setting that produces vapour. There is no benefit in heat here: the cannabinoid is the same and the by-products are not.

What a first setup needs

  • A battery with a voltage setting, so the option of running cool exists at all.
  • A refillable tank matched to the juice: thin liquid for a small mouth-to-lung tank, thicker for a higher-power one.
  • Spare coils, because a burnt taste is a worn coil and not a bad juice.
  • One bottle at a time. Two new flavours in a week is two variables.

What 2019 taught about cartridges

The wave of severe lung injury that hospitals saw in 2019, later called EVALI, was traced to vitamin E acetate — a thickening agent used in illicit THC cartridges, found in the lung fluid of the great majority of sampled cases. Nobody was buying it; it was in there because it made a diluted product look thick.

Two things follow for anyone buying CBD carts. What is added matters more than what is advertised, and the cases concentrated in products bought outside any regulated channel. A sealed cartridge from an unfamiliar marketplace seller is the shape of purchase that went wrong.

Disposables, refillables and carts

The same liquid is sold in three shapes, and the shape decides almost everything about the experience except what is in it.

FormatWhat it suitsWhat it costs you
Disposable penTrying a flavour or a brand once, with nothing to set upThe whole device is thrown away with the battery in it, and the liquid cannot be checked against a certificate you chose
Prefilled cartridge on a 510 batteryKeeping one battery and changing the liquidSealed, so you are trusting the label; the battery’s voltage is yours to get wrong
Refillable tank with a bottleKnowing exactly what went in, and the lowest cost per millilitreCoils, cleaning and the chance of buying a juice your device cannot feed

A refillable tank is the only one of the three where the bottle in your hand is the thing the certificate describes. That is a real argument for it on a shelf with this category’s testing record.

Flavour, and what it is made of

Flavour is the part of a vape juice with the most chemistry and the least oversight. The compounds used are food-grade, which is a statement about eating them rather than about heating them, and how they behave in a coil is an open research question rather than a settled one.

Two practical consequences. Sweetened juices caramelise on a coil and shorten its life, which is why a heavily flavoured bottle seems to go off when it is the hardware that has. And an unflavoured juice removes a variable if what you are trying to find out is whether the CBD does anything.

Why this page names no products

It used to. The products it named were 2019 stock, and six of the ten links went to a brand other than the one the entry named — a stale affiliate link under a heading that had been rewritten. Rather than carry links nobody had followed, the block came off.

The checks above are what survives a change of stock, and they are what we would use ourselves: a batch certificate matching the bottle, the five sections it should contain, the spectrum stated plainly, and milligrams per millilitre rather than a number on the front.

The products this page covers

Carried across from the earlier version of this page so the formats can be compared side by side. These are not recommendations: we have not tested them, and the details on each need checking against current listings before anyone acts on them.

Questions people ask

Is CBD vape oil the same as CBD oil?

No. Vape oil is propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin made to be inhaled; CBD oil is a tincture in MCT or hemp seed oil made to be swallowed. Inhaling the tincture can cause lung injury.

How many milligrams am I getting per puff?

Roughly one to two from a typical cartridge, working from a millilitre holding a couple of hundred milligrams over a hundred or two puffs. The device changes it, so keep the hardware constant if you are counting.

What should a lab certificate show?

Cannabinoids including a THC number, residual solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, and what was looked for and not found — dated, and matching the batch code on your bottle.

Why does this page not list brands?

The products it listed were 2019 stock and six of the ten links pointed at a different brand than the entry named. Checks that survive a change of stock are more use than a list that does not.
