What a capsule is good at
Every other format leaves the amount to you. A dropper is a guess, a puff is not a unit, and a fingertip of cream is whatever your finger held. A capsule is the same number every time.
That matters more than it sounds, because the only useful thing most people can do with CBD is run a careful experiment on themselves, and an experiment needs a constant. A capsule is the constant.
What it is worst at
Swallowed CBD goes through the gut wall and the liver before any of it circulates. A systematic review of CBD pharmacokinetics in humans puts oral bioavailability low and highly variable between people — a fraction of the dose, differing from person to person.
It is also the slowest route: thirty minutes to two hours before anything is in the blood, against minutes for inhalation. Neither of those is a fault, exactly. They are the trade you make for knowing the number.
The food effect is the biggest lever
In a phase I trial published in CNS Drugs, healthy volunteers took purified CBD fasted and again after a high-fat meal. The meal raised peak blood concentration roughly fourteen-fold and total exposure roughly four-fold.
Read that against a dosage chart. The difference between taking the same capsule before breakfast and after it is larger than the difference between most of the steps on the chart. If you are comparing two weeks, or two products, and you have not held food constant, you are measuring your meals.
Softgel or hard capsule
| Type | What it means |
|---|---|
| Softgel | CBD dissolved in an oil inside a gelatin or plant-based shell. The oil is doing the same job as the fat in a meal, which is the argument for this type. |
| Hard capsule | Powder, usually isolate with a carrier. Easier to make in a vegan shell, and more dependent on what you ate. |
| Tablet | Compressed powder with binders. The least common, and the hardest to break in half. |
Reading the number on the bottle
Capsules make this easier than any other format, and it is still worth checking. The figure on the front is sometimes the per-capsule amount and sometimes the bottle total.
- Milligrams per capsule is the only number that matters.
- Servings per container is sometimes two capsules, which halves the strength you thought you were buying.
- Spectrum: full spectrum carries a trace of THC, broad removes it, isolate is CBD alone.
- What else is in the shell: melatonin, turmeric, ashwagandha and caffeine all turn up, and all do more than the CBD at these amounts.
What a capsule costs per milligram
Capsules sit in the middle of the category on cost per milligram: cheaper than gummies, drinks or anything inhaled, dearer than buying an oil and measuring it yourself. The premium buys the manufacturing that makes every unit the same, which is the thing the format is for.
Two things inflate the figure without adding anything. A bottle sold on its total rather than its per-capsule strength invites the wrong comparison, and a blend with three botanicals in it is priced as a CBD product while much of the cost sits elsewhere. Work in milligrams per capsule and the shelf becomes comparable.
Swallowing them, and the small print
- Whole, with water, and softgels not chewed — the oil inside tastes of hemp for a reason.
- Not split. A softgel cannot be halved, which is the limitation of the format in one sentence.
- Kept cool and dark. Heat softens gelatin shells and they stick together.
- Away from a bathroom cabinet, where humidity does the same to hard capsules.
- Check the shell if you avoid animal products: gelatin is common and vegan alternatives are usually labelled.
Who a capsule suits
Somebody who has already found a dose they want to keep taking, somebody who wants to be sure the amount is constant while they measure something, and anybody who dislikes the taste of hemp extract — which is most people trying it for the first time.
It suits less well anyone still exploring, because the steps are fixed, and anyone who wants something to act quickly, because this is the slowest route there is.
Why a capsule cannot be adjusted
The strength of the format is also its limitation. If 25 mg does nothing and 50 mg is two capsules, there is no way to sit between them — and the one human trial that compared CBD doses directly found the middle dose working where the highest did not.
People who want to explore a range are better served by a sublingual oil, then moved onto capsules once they know the number they want. That order round is worth more than either format alone.
What the high-dose trials reported
| Reported | At what dose |
|---|---|
| Sleepiness and sedation | 10 to 20 mg per kilogram of body weight per day — hundreds of milligrams, far above any retail capsule. |
| Diarrhoea and reduced appetite | Dose-related, and the usual reason people stopped. |
| Raised liver enzymes | Particularly alongside valproate, and monitored with blood tests in that setting. |
| Interactions | CBD inhibits cytochrome P450 enzymes; the clobazam interaction is the best documented. |
The interaction point survives at any dose. If you take a prescribed medicine, whether CBD changes its level is a question for your pharmacist, answerable for your specific list and not in general.
Carried across from the earlier version of this page so the formats can be compared side by side. These are not recommendations: we have not tested them, and the details on each need checking against current listings before anyone acts on them.

- Vegan Capsules
- 15mg of CBD per Capsule
Vegetarian and vegan fans of CBD now have access to a capsule product that they can use guilt-free. Many gel capsules—for CBD and other medications—are made out of gelatin, so they are not ethical for vegans or vegetarians. SOL goes a step further to ensure a pure product. Not only does the company insist on using an organic, specially grown hemp, but they also extract the CBD using CO2, which eliminates the need for any chemical solvents or additives.
SOL only offers a container of 30 capsules at 15mg each, but you can save when you buy more than a single bottle. They promise that with regular use, their CBD will help to improve your immune system, get rid of inflammation, help you to sleep better, optimize the health of your brain, and reduce anxiety. SOL advises you to take your capsule(s) at the same time every day to balance and regulate the effects on your body.

Budget
- 35mg of CBD per Capsule
- Available with 60, 90 and 120 pills
If you want a CBD oil capsule that’s chock full of the helpful cannabinoids, CBD Essence has CBD Hemp Oil capsules boasting 35mg of CBD in each pill. A bottle with 30 capsules nets you 1,050mg in total. Bottles are also available with 60, 90, and 120 pills, all with 35mg of oil. The brand is insistent about manufacturing the product using sustainable practices. The plants come from fertile soil, which further ensures their safety. This is another brand that utilizes extraction via CO2 for a purer product.
The only other ingredients introduced into the liposomal formula are sunflower lecithin and virgin coconut oil. Both are certified organic, and since they’re all-natural, they won’t interfere with the hemp oil itself. The lack of additives is better for your health overall.
How to run the fortnight
- One capsule, one time of day, one relationship to food.
- A week of baseline first, measuring whatever you are actually interested in.
- Two weeks at the same dose before changing anything.
- Write it down at the time, not from memory on Sunday.
- Change one thing, and expect the answer to be about you rather than about CBD.
What a certificate should carry
A 2017 analysis in JAMA of 84 CBD extracts bought online found around seven in ten inaccurately labelled. A capsule hides its contents better than an oil does, which makes the certificate the only evidence of what is in it.
Cannabinoid content with a THC figure, residual solvents, heavy metals, pesticides, a date and a batch code matching the bottle. Anything less is a photograph of a laboratory rather than a test of your batch.

Questions people ask
Are capsules better than CBD oil?
They are more precise and slower. A capsule is the same dose every time, which is what a fair test needs; a sublingual oil is adjustable and part of it skips the liver. Many people use the oil to find a number and capsules to keep taking it.
Should I take CBD capsules with food?
It makes a large difference. In a phase I trial a high-fat meal raised peak blood concentration around fourteen-fold against the same dose fasted. Whatever you choose, keep it the same every time.
How long do capsules take to work?
Thirty minutes to two hours, because everything swallowed passes through the gut and the liver before it circulates. Judging one after twenty minutes is judging it before it has arrived.
What is the difference between a softgel and a capsule?
A softgel holds CBD already dissolved in oil, which does the same job as taking it with a fatty meal. A hard capsule usually holds powder, and depends more on what you ate.
