You are currently viewing CBD Isolate: Uses, Benefits And Effects

If you’ve ever read about CBD, you’ve likely found that it comes in many different forms: isolate, full-spectrum, crystals, oils, balms, and everything in between. It can be confusing to know what kind of CBD product is right for your needs, so today we’re going to focus on CBD isolate, what it is, and how you can use it.

CBD stands for cannabidiol (Can-na bi-di-ol). It’s a cannabinoid that can be derived from either marijuana or hemp, although isolates are most often produced from hemp plants. CBD is closely related to THC, but contains none of the psychoactive properties.

CBD has not always had the attention that it does now. Originally discovered in 1940, it was thought to be a useless cannabinoid because it did not produce the psychoactive fun of THC. However, thanks to a young girl born in 2006 named Charlotte Figi, CNN did a documentary in 2013 named “Weed” which highlighted Charlotte’s story: a child suffering from epilepsy and the subsequent miraculous recovery. Utilizing a high-CBD strain named for the brave girl, Charlotte’s Web is the brainchild of the Stanley brothers in Colorado. Now, because of her story, Charlotte has helped to shape the discussion and laws surrounding CBD, hemp, marijuana, and THC.

What Is CBD Isolate And How It Is Made

CBD isolate is a fine white powder containing 99% pure CBD. This pure crystalline contains only the CBD chemical compound, offering CBD in its most concentrated form that is free of any other plant matter.

This may cause you to think that CBD isolate is synthetic or crafted in a lab, which is not the case. CBD isolate is an all-natural cannabinoid supplement made from hemp oil that’s been refined down to pure CBD. This refinement process removes all of the oils, waxes, chlorophyll, and other plant material to leave behind only valuable cannabidiol.

CBD can be isolated in a few ways, but usually ends the same. There are a few common methods used: you can use a solvent, like ethanol, or you can use sub-critical CO2 extraction. Using a solvent will make the process more like distilling which has to be done multiple times to get rid of the parts you don’t want. CO2 extraction takes high-pressure CO2 gas and forces the oil through a series of filters. At this point, in order to purify the CBD further than 90%, a process known as chromatography is utilized to help bring the purity up to 98%+. Finally, decarboxylation is done to convert any remaining CBDA to CBD making it readily consumable by humans.

So as you may have figured, CBD isolate is almost self-explanatory. It’s just the CBD isolated from the rest of the parts of the plant, including all other cannabinoids, terpenes, chlorophyll, and any plant matter. CBD isolate that is 98%+ pure will come in a refined white crystal powder. This is great for adding to different recipes for cooking and baking, as it mixes right in with your other ingredients. The other kind of isolate is CBD crystals, which are larger and thicker than the powder and most commonly used for dabbing (more on that in a minute).

Conversely, CBD full-spectrum may come as an oil, as it will include all the other cannabinoids, including what minor THC there is in hemp (0.03%) and terpenes.

How To Use CBD Isolate

cbd isolate uses

CBD isolate can be used in a variety of ways depending on your cannabis consumption methods, whether you prefer to smoke or consume edibles, and what kind of effects you’re looking to achieve. Here are some of the most popular ways to use CBD isolate products:

Sublingual Application (under the tongue)

The easiest way to consume CBD isolate is to place it under your tongue and allow it to be absorbed by the delicate tissues for 60-90 seconds. This will instantly deliver the CBD to your bloodstream, allowing them to get to work quickly. If you need instant relief, this is your best bet.

CBD-Infused Oil

If you’re used to consuming CBD in oil form, it’s easy to make your own isolate oil by simply combining your isolate crystals with a cooking oil like coconut, olive, palm, or avocado. You can either put a few drops under the tongue for direct sublingual absorption or add the oil to your favorite foods and recipes for a CBD infusion.

When cooking with CBD, it’s important to remember that CBD has a boiling point of 320-356 degrees Fahrenheit, so be sure to keep your temperature below that to prevent the compounds from breaking down and losing their medicinal effects. We love adding CBD isolate or oil to our morning coffee or smoothies, or to a simple breakfast like yogurt and granola.

CBD-Infused Honey

For a deliciously sweet CBD treat, add your CBD crystals to honey or agave nectar for an infused food supplement. You can do this using a double boiler to gently dissolve the CBD into the honey without burning anything.

Vaping CBD Isolate

Science has shown that vaporizing CBD isolate and inhaling it through your lungs allows for the highest bioavailability, even more than through edibles or sublingual absorption. Vaping keeps the half-life of CBD around 27-35 hours while ingesting it through your stomach can take as long as 2-5 days to work its way through your system. These numbers all depend on the amount you consume and the frequency with which you consume as well, so it’s important to keep in mind that everybody is different.

Depending on the type of isolate you buy, the type of vaporizer you will need may vary as well. CBD isolate crystals are typically used for dabbing, so if you have a vaporizer or dab rig used with wax concentrates, you can dab CBD crystals from that rig as well.

Effects And Benefits Of CBD Isolate

There are many different ways that CBD can help our bodies as it interacts with our endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is located in the central and peripheral nervous systems and responsible for helping the body reach and maintain homeostasis. When an injury, illness, or deficiency causes this system to go off track, it leads to symptoms like pain, inflammation, nausea, changes in mood or memory, and more. It is up to the endocannabinoid system to fix these problems, which happens through communication by CB1 and CB2 receptors.

CBD works with these receptors by improving communication between cells, which in turn improves the endocannabinoid systems chances of effectively relieving pain and inflammation. When communication throughout the body is strong, it is easier for these symptoms to be kept under control. Here are some of the ways CBD can help the body:

Pain and Inflammation Relief

Studies have shown that CBD’s modulation of endocannabinoid receptors is an effective form of pain management, especially when the pain is related to inflammation. When CBD is consumed regularly, neuropathic and inflammatory pain is suppressed through CB2 modulation. One study has found CBD to help inhibit the release of inflammatory cytokines that cause arthritis, and another found that it helps to decrease tissue injury and improve the quality of healing after an injury or surgery.

Anti Anxiety

In animal studies, CBD oil for anxiety and depression showed to have a positive effect, including those related to social anxiety disorder. In some cases, it also helped to treat symptoms of PTSD, panic disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

Anti Nausea

There is no shortage of anecdotal evidence and animal studies showing CBD to help with nausea and vomiting symptoms. This is a popular reason why cancer patients will opt for CBD, as it will relieve these symptoms that can worsen from treatment, allowing them to keep food down and heal more effectively.

Anti Seizure

Charlotte Figi, the young girl mentioned above, is just one of many epilepsy patients that have found CBD to reduce the severity and/or quantity of their seizures. Pharmaceutical companies are even working on cannabis-based drugs that promise anti-seizure effects.

As you can see, there are many reasons why CBD isolate is a unique and popular choice for people who want the power of cannabidiol without the fluff. Next time you’re curious how CBD can help you, we highly suggest giving an isolate product a try.
