9 Popular Ways to Use Kief and How Much Kief to Use

As you likely already know, there are a multitude of ways you can use the precious kief leftover in your grinder — but knowing how much kief to use gets a little tricky.

We’ve done the research and are providing insight for how much kief to use for the most popular methods of kief consumption in the following sections.

#1: Smoking a Joint

One of the most common ways to consume kief is by smoking a joint.

Some say that consuming kief by smoking a joint tends to pack the hardest punch, while others say that using kief in a joint is hardly beneficial.

If you’re interested in smoking a joint, you’ll want to know how much kief to use.

How Much Kief to Use When in a Joint

To get the most out of your experience, we recommend that you dust some of the kief into your joint mixed with fresh flower for a potent smoke.

Using kief in a joint is one of the messier consumption methods, but it’s just as beneficial.

To consume kief from a joint all you need to do is mix the kief with the bud before you roll it up, wrap your joint, and you’re ready to go.

#2: Using a Pipe

If you’re looking for an easy, mess-free way to consume kief, using a pipe may be the best method for you.

Similar to smoking kief from a joint, the most recommended way to do so in a pipe is by layering it with the bud — flower, kief, flower, kief — or sprinkling it on top of your pipe, and then spark once and enjoy.

Just remember, unlike dried marijuana, kief will continue to burn and will smolder until it is fully burned. So, spark your pipe, toke, and be attentive, otherwise, it will be gone before you get a chance to reap the benefits.

Don’t have any bud on hand? You can use kief in a pipe without it.

But how do you know how much kief to use in a pipe?

When using kief in a pipe, it’s important to remember just how potent kief can be. A great way to decide how much kief to use is by starting with a small amount, say, ¼ gram, and increasing the amount based on the effects.

But keep in mind how potent kief can be. Too much and you’ll have a serious case of couch-lock.

#3: Vaping

If you’re looking for a way to vape kief, you have a couple of options available. You can either:

  1. Use a dry-herb vaporizer; or
  2. Turn into a juice for vaping

Using a dry herb vaporizer, vaping kief is easy. All you have to do is layer the kief in with your dried marijuana in its chamber and begin at a low temperature.

As you increase the temperature, you’ll get a different range of the product’s efficacy.

Turning the kief into juice for vaping requires a bit more work, and there are several ways to make kief into a juice, but these involve heating the kief with products such as water and food-grade glycerin and glycol.

But when using kief in a vape, it’s important to know how much kief to use.

How Much Kief to Use When Vaping

If you are using a dry herb vaporizer, we recommend following the directions that come with your vape. If you are still unsure of how much kief to use, start with a minimal amount of kief and increase the amount based on the effects.

When creating a juice, most recipes call for 5 mg of kief. Consult your recipe for any changes in ratios.

#4: Make Rosin

What is rosin?

Rosin is an extraction process using heat and pressure to squeeze any resinous sap from the kief. Rosin is often used to make hash oil at home because it’s easy to do and cost-efficient.

The perk of rosin? It’s 100% solvent-free. Rosin typically is also used for:

  • Dabbing
  • Vaping
  • Adding to a bowl or bong
  • Etc.

When making rosin with kief, knowing how much kief to use can be difficult.

Kief is potent, and the effects vary from person to person. We recommend always starting with a small amount of kief and adjusting each batch of rosin based on the impact of your previous batch.

#5: Add to Your Morning Coffee

Heat activates cannabinoids in kief, making adding it to your morning coffee the perfect match if you’re looking for an easy way to consume kief and have long-lasting, strong results.

There are several ways you can go about adding kief to your morning coffee. You can do this by adding …

  • Kief-infused milk or creamer
  • Decarboxylated kief

… into your brewed coffee.

Although we firmly believe in starting slow and adding more kief as you learn about what works for your body, most recipes recommend using at least one gram of kief to make a potent cup of coffee.

#6: Brew Kief Tea

Not a coffee fan, but still interested in a warm beverage that kief can be consumed in?

Brew up a cup of tea, and add in your decarboxylated kief or your kief-infused milk/creamer into your cup

Depending on the strain and how your body reacts, a cup of kief tea is a great way to end your night and get a good night’s rest.

Similarly to coffee, 1 gram of kief is enough for a potent 6 ounce cup of coffee.

#7: Make Kief Butter

Have you ever made edibles with cannabis? If so, you may already know that the best canna-treats involve cannabutter.

But did you know you can make kief butter for yummy, infused treats?

That’s right. Those precious bits at the bottom of your grinder can be used to make kief butter.

Making kief butter is easy, just follow these steps:

  1. Decarboxylate the kief and let it cool.
  2. Heat butter in a saucepan until it begins to simmer.
  3. Place the decarded kief into the butter and stir until it dissolves completely — you’ll want to continuously stir to avoid any kief or butter burning.
  4. Once all the kief has dissolved, remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool.
  5. Refrigerate or freeze the kief butter and use as needed.

For an easy-to-follow recipe, that doesn’t require constant attention, consider using our Crockpot cannabutter recipe and replacing the cannabis with kief.

How much kief to use to make kief butter depends greatly on how strong you want the infusion to be.

Five to six grams of kief per cup of butter is typically more than enough to feel the effects.

#8: Turn Into Kief Hash

Have a reasonable amount of kief that you’re unsure of what to do with?

Consider turning your kief into hash.

Kief hash is a concentrate that is made up of compressed and heated kief. The chemical makeup and the consistency of the kief are changed, making it slightly different from plain kief.

Kief hash can be used the same way that regular kief is consumed, on top of bowls and blunts, or smoked independently.

Knowing how much kief to use for kief hash isn’t necessarily measured in grams.

#9: Making Edibles

Another fantastic way to enjoy that beautiful kief you’ve been saving is to make edibles with it.

Like when making cannabutter or kief butter, kief should be decarboxylated before baking it into your treats — otherwise, the effects will be minimal if not nonexistent.

A few of the many fun ways to make kief edibles include:

  • Creating seasonings
  • Salad dressings
  • Brownies
  • Cookies
  • Gummies
  • And more

How Much Kief to Use in Edibles

Every recipe will be different, but generally, it is recommended to use 1/16 of a gram to ½ a gram for your edibles.

How much kief to use in edibles depends greatly on a person’s:

  • Weight
  • Frequency of consumption
  • Alcohol consumption while consuming kief
  • Etc.
